Aerodynamics and position stability

aeroclass-1
Aerodynamics and position stability – Air resistance is futile

On 27 June a masterclass will be given by Björn Geesmann and Daniel Schade.
Location: Velodrome Büttgen (close to Düsseldorf)

The instructors aim at combining the fields of aerodynamics and biomechanics in cycling.
Next to the classical position analysis to reduce aches and improve comfort and force transmission, aerodynamics gains importance for many top- and amateur-athletes. To improve performance, the focus is not only on increasing the power but also on reducing the resistances that are placed on the athlete-machine-system.

The masterclass on the topic “Aerodynamics and position stability” introduces a new method to analyse and optimize the rider-bike-system: By closely connecting biomechanics and aerodynamics, an aero-fitting allows finding the perfect balance of both aspects for each athlete individually. In this course, we will present the basics of both aspects theoretically and use case studies for visualization. In addition, this course offers an extensive practical part directly on the velodrome. Participants will thus directly gain hands-on experience with the individual elements of the aero-fitting. Apart from a live measurement of the air resistance, also the stability of the aero-position under different circumstances is measured and analysed in real time. In the second practical part different changes to the position are being made and the course participants will be asked to analyse the effect of these changes.

About the instructors

BJÖRN GEESMANN, STAPS, www.staps-online.com
As the CEO of Germanys leading institute in performance diagnostics, training science and aerodynamic testings – STAPS -, Björn Geesmann works with professional and amateur athletes since nearly ten years. After writing his master thesis on the effect of ultra endurance performance on physiological markers he finished his academic studies in 2012 with a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Coaching at the German Sports University in Cologne, Germany. Since 2008 Björn works for STAPS, a sport science institute with a unique method of performance analysis, and has supervised more than 250 professional and amateur athletes since then. Additionally to training science and diagnostics, biomechanical and aerodynamic analysis and optimizations are focused by him. His palmares shows several World-Tour-Teams and world class triathletes aside from plenty amateur athletes in cycling and triathlon

DANIEL SCHADE, gebioMized, www.gebiomized.de
Daniel Schade is involved in moving sports biomechanics forwards for more than 15 years now. After graduating in Sports Science from the University of Münster and writing his final thesis on the Analysis of Saddle Pressure Mapping on Custom Saddles, he co-founded the cycling biomechanics brand ‘gebioMized’. Since then, he works as biomechanical researcher and develops sports analysis technology, such as pressure mapping, motion capturing and force analysis tools. His focus is on cycling and he is a Cycling Analyst with more than ten years of fitting experience. Daniel uses his expertise when providing biomechanical support to several Pro-Tour teams, such as Trek-Segafredo, Movistar and Katusha. Since 2014 he is providing aerodynamic fittings to several world class time trialists and triathletes as part of the STAPS-gebioMized aero team.
